[edit]For an important topic like this, surely a stub is better than a speedy? Securiger 16:32, 29 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- Definately; This is a fine stub (good work!) However speedy deletion was better than having the original float around. Feel free to remove CSD notices when you improve articles like this. They're just not meant to be removed by the original author without significantly changing the article, as often happens with vandalism. --fvw*† 16:41, 2004 Nov 29 (UTC)
More, or, not enough?"
[edit]This is a slim article for a very thick book. Dugong.is.good.tucker (talk) 23:01, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
- We are busy finishing the Samuel Johnson page. :) Ottava Rima (talk) 23:18, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

superfluous word
[edit]'However is a superfluous word, i would recommend you remove them to get your GA level. Buzzzsherman (talk) 04:02, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
- "However" is a very standard word and has an important rhetorical purpose. What would you have in its place? Ottava Rima (talk) 04:39, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
- it should not be replaced but re-phrased Wikipedia:Words to avoid#superfluous word
- it should not be replaced but re-phrased Wikipedia:Words to avoid#superfluous word
However, although, whereas, despite.... are words that should never be used in a encyclopedia.
These words can imply that one alternative is less favored than another. Structures where two alternatives are contrasted are more likely to have this problem than situations where the word is used to emphasize a notable change.
Are you saying your getting GA level with words like this??? Also i see you have passed articles to GAlevel. Do they have this words in them??/ Please read the guideline on words to avoid. Buzzzsherman (talk) 05:44, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
- update i have asked a question here Wikipedia talk:Good article nominations#QUESTION...word However I see many people are using the word again
- Buzzzsherman, I've been writing encyclopedic material for a -very- long time, and that is completely incorrect. "These words can imply that one alternative is less favored than another." Yes, they are -supposed- to imply that. Furthermore, the guideline says "or used with care are listed here". Ottava Rima (talk) 13:49, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
Shouldn't the article title be "THE Life of Samuel Johnson"?
[edit]The book title includes The. I don't see why Wikipedia would remove a word from the book title. You don't do it with film titles. Equinox ◑ 23:58, 27 February 2024 (UTC)

Life of Samuel Johnson → ? – There appears to be various titles of this book, depending on the source. The current article is inconsistent: title says "Life of Samuel Johnson" but lead sentence says "The Life of Samuel Johnson, LL.D." Here are the titles and their potential cases:
- The Life of Samuel Johnson, LL.D.
Looking at this first edition, the original title appears to be "The Life of Samuel Johnson, LL.D." This is the same title used by Britannica.
- Life of Samuel Johnson
This is the current title of the Wikipedia article, and according to Google Scholar, it is a name sometimes used for the book.
- Life of Samuel Johnson, LL.D
This is the name that appears on the infobox image, it also appears on some results in Scholar.
- The Life of Samuel Johnson
The name used by The Oxford Companion to English Literature. Also appears on Scholar.
I have no idea which of these is the common name. ―Howard • 🌽33 20:16, 5 May 2025 (UTC)
- Another title: "The Life of Samuel Johnson LLD" in a The Guardian article. ―Howard • 🌽33 20:18, 5 May 2025 (UTC)
